There are 4 x-ray features of both osteo- and rheumatoid arthritis, two are the same and two are opposites:

 

BOTH OA AND RA:

1. joint space narrowing

2. cysts

 

OA

1. osteophytes

2. subchondral sclerosis

 

RA

1. periarticular erosions

2. periarticlar porosis



SOFT TISSUE INJURIES

Rest

Ice

Compression

Elevation

low-no impact return to activities

Referral to specialist in soft-tissue injuries


SIMPLE/MECHANICAL BACK PAIN

Keep active

Low-no impact exercise eg. pilates, yoga, swimming, cycling, cross training

Simple lumbar extension/ multifidus exercises

Early referral to physiotherapy for therapeutic ultrasound, acupuncture, massage
